Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel has revealed his plan to make his central city area entirely wireless by using the current infrastructure to develop a network of wi-fi hotspots and unbroken Internet access.
Emanuel wants to ensure the position of Chicago as a broadband leader in the US by using the city's traffic and street lights and underground subways as a means to get broadband across the entire central city. He believes this would give Chicago a huge advantage and put to good use the fact that the city is already considered to be the backbone of US broadband.
Emanuel has made some sweeping changes since he came to office last year. As well as overhauling the city's infrastructure in a $7 billion plan, he has replaced board members, guarded against corruption, hosted a NATO summit and encouraged large companies to increase their presence in the city. He sees Chicago as being a future great city of the World.
When he took over, the new mayor was surprised to find that his office was not even wired for the Internet. This sparked his realization that he must rebuild the infrastructure of the city with huge investments in schools and transport as well as the broadband networks. He sees this as important to ensure that the city is built on 21st century foundations. He wants Chicago to become one of the most livable cities in the US.
Finally Emanuel believes that the only way to achieve greatness is to take as much of the economy of his city into the residents own hands as possible. He points out that the government cannot be relied upon to get things done in Chicago - something he learned as Obama's former chief of staff. He is making a start by ensuring that the city has an Internet network to be proud of.
