Dallas is one of those cities which will be offered a $5 price break for those customers who are light Internet users by Time Warner Cable (TWC). The company is offering a range of tiered pricing options and special deals are being offered in a number of Texas cities, including Austin and Dallas.
Customers who use less than 5 gigabytes of data per month qualify for the Essentials tier and $5 off the usual TWC monthly prices. Those who go over this monthly allowance can pay just $1 per gigabyte up to a maximum of $25.
The company has stated that customers in Dallas and other parts of Texas will be able to switched between a metered service and an unmetered service as often as they like. On online meter will allow customers to check and see how much data they are using on an hourly, daily or monthly basis.
There will be a 60 day grace period for customers to adjust to their usage patterns before overages will be charged for. Customers will still receive notification of the overages so they can make a more informed choice.
The Essentials package was first introduced by TWC earlier this year in other parts of the state and it is now rolling out to Dallas. However the plan has met some resistance from customers who say that it may place restraints on people who do not want to pay for more data even if they need it.
It is pointed out that those who are giving up unlimited data plans in exchange for the $5 discount are not really getting a great deal. It is felt that this type of package may set the precedent that having unlimited access to the Internet is a luxury not available to everyone.
A number of other providers are now using usage based pricing models, so it is possible for TWC to take these steps with less of a backlash.
