Fiber Optic and Wireless Developments in El Paso:
CenturyLink has received the approvals required to open up two new cable franchises in the El Paso area. The telecommunication company is hoping to roll out its Prism IPTV service to residents in due course and this approval has paved the way.

The agreement was unanimous among the county commissioners. Peggy Littleton from the county commissioners has commented that they did not want to be the roadblock for other regions in the area to receive the cable service.

CenturyLink has pointed out however, that before they can commit to bringing the new TV service to El Paso it needs to have franchises in three other areas - Monument (already received), Colorado Springs and Fountain.

Jim Campbell from CenturyLink has said that the local county commissioners seems to recognize that the benefits of competition will be good for the area. He is confident about getting the approvals needed in the other regions. He says that eventually the service could provide 50 jobs and this could rise to 100.

The $20 million investment will result in new fiber networks leading to the existing street level cabinets and mini video head ends for each user. CenturyLink already offers a telephone and broadband service in El Paso.

Comcast provides the current cable service in the area and the company has said that they are happy to have some competition as long as it is on a level playing field.
