Indianapolis is the capital of the US state of Indiana and has a population of close to 850,000. This makes it the twelfth largest city in the US and one of the fastest growing. The city is well known historically for its manufacturing industries, but this has moved on to include finance, education and health-care.
Anyone visiting Indianapolis will be pleased to note that there is plenty to do. The Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and the NHRA US Nationals are all held there and well as a number of other sporting events.
The downtown area has been ranked as one of the best in the US with more than 200 retail shops, 35 hotels and 300 restaurants. The city has a number of high rise buildings with the first being built in 1888 at 78 meters high. This has remained the highest building in the metropolitan area until the 1970's due to a local ordinance not allowing any higher buildings in the area.
Nowadays, there are are number of high-rises in the central district which were built as the economy started to boom in the 1980's.
The population of Indianapolis is made up of around 66% white, 25% African American and a mix of native American, Asian and Hispanic making up th rest. It is also a huge center for the Yugoslave community who settled there after the wars in Yugoslavia during the 1990's.
There are a number of universities in the area with Butler being the largest and best known. It was founded in 1855 and it currently serves more than 4,000 students. It is well known for sports such as basketball and volleyball.
In 2003 Indianapolis started hosting the Gen Con role playing game convention. Attendance is huge with more than 30,000 attendees coming to the Indiana Convention center during the week. The center has also hosted the Star Wars Convention.
Indianapolis is home to a number of high profile companies in the telecommunications field. These include the First Internet bank of Indiana, Emmis Communications as well as distribution centers for Amazon.com and Foxconn.
