Fiber Optic and Wireless Developments in Los Angeles:
A $12.5 million contract has been awarded to Raytheon Company by the Los Angeles County to install public safety technologies such as the Long Term Evolution (LTE) data network. This high speed fiber optic broadband network will replace all current public safety communications systems and will be used by the sheriff departments and the fire departments.

It is thought that the new system will allow the safety departments involved to be more responsive, save on maintenance costs and improve efficiency. Mike Prout, the vice president of Security and Transport Systems for Raytheon Network Centric Systems has said that the company provides innovative technologies and the safety departments can rely on them.

The speed of the new broadband will allow fire department dispatchers to directly connect with the fire department closest to the event at the touch of a button. There will also be the ability for several fire departments to coordinate their systems. In particular it is thought this will be useful during wildfire season.

Scott Edson from the Sheriffs Department Communications and Fleet Management Bureau has commented that the new system should allow them to protect their officers and connect together more departments. He says this is the first step towards improving the connectivity across the region.

Raytheon has also been involved in the installation of mobile laptop computers in Sheriff Department vehicles to help officers perform their duties with more efficiency.
