The city of New York has decided to turn little used phone booths into wi-fi hotspots, with a pilot program being set up at 10 booths across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
The phone booths will be fitted with a military grade antenna which can provide a 300 foot radius of wi-fi signal. The population of New York and visitors to the city will be able to use the wi-fi hotspots absolutely free, provided they agree to certain terms and conditions and agree to visit a tourism page about the city before they browse.
Currently the wi-fi will be offered without ads, but it is thought that this could change as the installation is rolled out across the city and the subsequent costs start to mount up. There are 13,000 payphones in New York and between 40% and 60% of these are thought to be out of service at any one time. Many of these are now considered to be eyesores which encourage vandalism. This new service could give them a useful purpose and save the city money in cleaning and fixing them.
The installation of the phone booth wi-fi is running alongside the popular AT&T hotpsots in the city parks and the increased access at schools, libraries, public buildings and centers for seniors. All of these initiatives are popular with smartphone users who can use the wi-fi for free without using up their limited data plans. In addition the city can increase its tourism revenue. In addition the use of city wi-fi means that there is less congestion on regular networks.
The first payphone wi-fi hotpots will be in place shortly and more are likely to be rolled out if the trial goes well and it proves popular.
