It was announced in June that Sprint will be bringing 4G wireless technology to San Antonio from the middle of July 2012. The city will be part of a rollout to a total of five cities which will get the initial service before a nationwide rollout as times goes on.
San Antonio already has 4G networks from Verizon and AT&T, but Sprint will be the only one to offer unlimited data plans as part of their package. AT&T and Verizon only offer 4G under tiered data plans.
The CEO of Sprint, Dan Hesse has confirmed that the data plans on offer from the carrier will be at a cost of $79.95 per month. This package will include unlimited data, texts and voice calls, all at 4G speeds which are significantly faster than those on offer under 3G networks.
Hesse has pointed out that the company will be continuing to offer unlimited data as a way of setting themselves apart from the other players in the 4G market. Although experts do believe that this is unlikely to last forever, once the benefits of 4G become widely known and it is used by more customers.
4G allows smartphone users to download music, upload photos and watch streamed video on their mobiles wherever they are (as long as they have a 4G signal). This means that they are using significantly more data than they might usually. Sprint has differentiated themselves in the market by offering unlimited data which is essential to get the full use of a 4G connection.
Sprint have been selling 4G-capable phones in the San Antonio area for some time in anticipation of the rollout. They currently work on the 3G network, but will work on both once the 4G service goes live.
