Fiber Optic and Wireless Developments in San Diego:
A three year plan to develop the broadband in rural and under-served parts of San Diego has received a cash boost from the California Public Utilities Commission this month. The San Diego Imperial Regional Broadband Consortium (SDIRBC) has gladly accepted the $450,000 cash grant which they will use to encourage the use of broadband in the area.

This money comes on top of a previous grant for $150,000 which was given to the SDIRBC recently which was used to identify those areas which would benefit from further broadband funding.

This study identified a number of regions where education, health and safety and economic training was required. In particular it was found that Warner Springs will benefit from an injection of funds for broadband education.

Christina Luhn from the SDIRBC has commented that it is important to make sure that the money is put to good use. She says that there are parts of the region which can only get dial up broadband at present. The organization has been gathering funds to boost the broadband in the region for some time and received a grant from the California Services Fund in addition to the current funding.

The SDIRBC has been working alongside a DSL provider ViaSat and their partner Yuma, which may be able to provide satellite broadband for those who cannot get a good signal in any other way. They say that satellite may not be a broadband technology as such, but the definition of broadband needs to be a moving target especially as requirements increase.

Other providers are being encouraged to discuss their deployment plans in the area.
