The San Jose-based company Cisco Systems has announced that the number of online video users are likely to double from 792 million now, to 1.5 billion by 2016. The numbers have been released as part of their Visual Networking Index which they announce each year.
The report suggested that video already accounted for 51% of all consumer Internet traffic in 2011 and that percentage would go up to 54% in 2016. Other services such as TV streamed over the Internet, video on demand services and peer-to-peer traffic will see video content increase to around 86% of all Internet traffic according to Cisco.
Of course this will not be possible unless there are decent broadband connection available. The survey results indicated that global Internet connections will jump from 10.3 billion last year to 18.9 billion in 2016. The range of devices used will also be huge with smartphones, tablets, TV sets, handheld devices and gaming consoles able to connect to the Internet as well as the humble computer and laptop.
When it comes to smartphone use, the only way is up as well. Data usage on the mobile is expected to increase from 110mb per month to 1.7 GB each month by 2016.
Finally, connection speeds will need to increase in line with the increased usage. It is thought that average speeds will increase from around 9Mb to 34Mb in 2016 and this will allow almost all Internet video to be high definition quality.
