Verizon Offers Great Careers Whilst Government Secures their Holdings: [13th Sep 2009]

>>> Verizon has been named as one of Business Week's "Best Places to Launch a Career" for the fourth year in a row. It is the highest placed telecommunications company on the list at 22nd. Data collected for a survey of 60,000 U.S undergraduates was used to compile the ranking. Executive vice-president of human resources, Marc Reed says that in order to maintain innovation in their advanced broadband network, they needed to appoint the best recruits. Verizon has also invested around $1bn in employee development.

>>> Well known telecoms analyst, Blair Levin has said that current holders of broadband licenses will need to justify their holdings or risk losing space to providers of high speed Internet. Spectrum availability has emerged as a big problem due to the proliferation of smart phones which require more bandwidth. The U.S Government hold a sizable chunk of the wireless airwaves which many believe could be better used in the private sector.

>>> The U.S Department of Agriculture and the Commerce Department are looking at applications for $7.2bn which has been put aside by Congress to build new high speed Internet lines and services. A plan which is due in February 2010 will detail how the Government will ensure that the Internet is available to the whole country. The FCC has held meetings with telecoms and government delegates to gain input.

>>> Sunset Digital Communications has released details of their agreement with WBS Connect, a provider of technology solutions. WBS is able to buy Internet service in large quantities which they have been able to sell to Sunset at lower prices which will in turn be passed to their customers. Sunset provide very fast fiber optic broadband to the Southwest Virginia area. They hope it will be more reliable for those who rely on good Internet connection.
