9th Jan 2010 - AT&T has confirmed the completion of a software upgrade at it's 3G cell sites nationwide. The upgrade, known as High-Speed Packet Access 7.2 technology is the first part of a plan to enhance the network to provide the best possible mobile broadband experience. It will pave the way for faster speeds which will be in place during 2010 and 2011. The combination of the 7.2 technology and fiber optics could lead to speeds of 7.2Mbps.

AT&T has also suggested to the FCC that they stop using the old switched telephone network, describing them as "relics of a by-gone era". They have said that a deadline should be set for when these services will no longer be available. They commented that it makes no sense for providers to offer two separate services when customer preference is increasingly leaning toward an all broadband network. In their 32 page report, AT&T listed detailed statistics on the drop in use of the old telephone system. Currently just 20% of American households use the switched access lines for the telephone service and one quarter of households rely on a mobile phone exclusively.

18th Dec 2009 - AT&T has extended the availability of its 3G mobile broadband network to northern Worcester County. They expect their customers to experience better connectivity and performance due to the upgrade. They have also upgraded parts of Palmer, Rutland and Warren.

In addition, AT&T have also announced that they will be providing free Internet access to all 13,000 McDonalds locations across the country starting in mid January. Currently people visiting McDonalds have been paying $2.95 for two hours of access and the chain hope that having free access will encourage customers to stay longer. AT&T provide a similar service to other stores around the country including the Barnes and Noble bookstores.

AT&T has also hit out at the FCC this week and suggested that net neutrality rules could hurt investment in networks. The rules require providers to carry all Internet content and applications. AT&T say that while preserving the open character of the Internet is important, they believe the FCC should balance that with the need for incentives and competition. This would limit the opportunities for consumers to buy innovative products and services. The FCC argue that allowing providers to pick and choose services would destroy the free and open Internet and lead to pay-for-play services.

12th Nov 2009 - AT&T have been looking into ways of encouraging its customers to use its wireless network less as it struggles to keep up with demand. 40% of the demand comes from just 3% of its customers who use the iPhone, which runs exclusively on the AT&T network. Chief Executive for AT&T Ralph de la Vega has said that no other provider in the world is seeing the levels of penetration into the Smartphone 3G market that AT&T have experienced.

A survey conducted by Consumer Reports has found that AT&T have the lowest levels of customer service in the US and was the only carrier to receive below average marks for voice quality. They also received below average in all areas of customer service, but did manage average for their data and text service. AT&T still have the most expensive call plans at an average of $86 a month for voice services and $126 a month for voice with data.

Despite this, AT&T is rolling out a 24mbps service to parts of Austin as part of a limited pilot service. Known as Max Turbo, the new Internet service is offering speeds which are up to 4 times that offered to most in the area. Residents will have to pay $65 a month to have the service as part of their bundle, but not all residents will be able to receive the service due to distance restrictions.

27th Nov 2009 - The Telecommunications industry, in particular AT&T and Verizon, are not happy about a recent survey of global broadband services which indicates that sharing of lines provides better penetration rates. It is feared that this could lead to network lines being opened up forcing ISPs to share line space. The survey was prepared for the FCC and according to AT&T is slanted and violates professional statistical standards. The Telecoms Association warns that the FCC should not rely on the study when formulating its national Broadband Plan.

AT&T has this week announced the launch of its DataConnectPass "pay as you need it" data service to be used with the fastest 3G service in the US. Perfect for travelers or people on holiday, the pass can be bought in daily, weekly or monthly packages and can be used when needed. The SIM is simply inserted into the netbook or laptop and activated by following the prompts. It can only be used on AT&T's wireless network in the United Sates. The launch follows a similar product from Verizon which was released last week.

23rd Nov 2009 - AT&T has announced its third generation wireless network has been expanded into St Laurence County giving residents access to mobile broadband. According to independent testing, the providers 3G network is the fastest in the nation. AT&T say this is part of their ongoing ambition to enable its customers to quickly access the services and content which they require and to fuel economic growth for the region. 3G technology allows the users to surf the web and download files faster than ever, along with access to the latest mobile applications.
